The Philippine Charity Sweepstakes Office (PCSO) has responded to the buzz surrounding the poorly edited photo of a Lotto 6/42 jackpot winner that recently went viral. PCSO General Manager Melquiades ‘Mel’ Robles confirmed the authenticity of the photo during a Senate Committee on Ways and Means hearing, chaired by Senator Raffy Tulfo. The photo in question depicted the winner from San Jose Del Monte, Bulacan, who claimed a substantial jackpot of P43,882,361.60 at the PCSO Main Office on December 28, 2023.
Addressing the concerns raised by Senator Tulfo and the public, Robles explained that the editing, albeit poorly executed, was a deliberate attempt by the PCSO to safeguard the winner’s identity. This protective measure stemmed from a previous complaint where a winner’s face was concealed, but their distinctive clothing made them recognizable, leading to a plea for more comprehensive anonymity.
Robles admitted to the subpar quality of the editing and extended his apologies for the oversight, emphasizing that the primary intention was to obscure any identifiable features of the winner’s attire. He reassured that the individual in the photo is, indeed, a real person, and the editing was solely for privacy preservation.
The 47-year-old housewife, whose winning combination of numbers was based on family birthdays and two ‘special’ numbers, inadvertently became the subject of this controversy. Amidst the dialogue about the photo, Senator Tulfo highlighted the broader implications of responsible gambling and public welfare, referencing Senate Bill No. 2374. This bill, filed in August 2023, aims to introduce measures to prevent the online placing of bets for all Lotto games, thereby promoting responsible gambling practices and ensuring a safer, more regulated landscape for the nation’s lottery system.
As the PCSO navigates this situation, the incident serves as a reminder of the importance of maintaining winner anonymity while also ensuring professionalism and accuracy in public communications.
