The Philippine Air Force (PAF) has officially decommissioned two of its most storied combat aircraft—the OV-10 Bronco and the AH-1 Cobra—marking the end of an era in its 77-year history.
A ceremony led by the 15th Strike Wing took place on December 28 at Major Danilo Atienza Air Base in Cavite City. The event gathered senior officers, retired personnel, and former crew members to honor the aircraft that served with distinction in various missions over decades.
Legacy of the AH-1 Cobra
The AH-1 Cobra, the PAF’s first dedicated attack helicopter, entered service in 2019 as a gift from King Abdullah II of Jordan. Despite its relatively short service period, the Cobra played a critical role in combat operations, including:
- Close Air Support (CAS) during counter-insurgency missions, such as Oplan Polaris II in Cagayan.
- Battlefield Air Interdictions in Nueva Vizcaya and Abra.
- Providing support to ground forces in anti-terrorism campaigns.
The OV-10 Bronco: A Veteran of the Skies
The OV-10 Bronco, introduced in 1991, served the PAF for over three decades, showcasing adaptability and precision in both combat and support roles. With 41 units acquired from the U.S. and Thailand, the aircraft was instrumental in campaigns like:
- Operation Thunderbolt (2000): The dismantling of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) stronghold.
- Basilan and Sulu Campaigns (2001, 2006): Supporting counter-insurgency missions.
- Battle of Marawi (2017): Conducting 88 airstrikes against Islamic State and Maute insurgents.
The Bronco also broke barriers by being piloted by the PAF’s first two female combat pilots.
Symbol of Dedication and Resilience
The PAF praised the OV-10 Bronco and AH-1 Cobra for their roles in defending the nation, calling them “symbols of resilience and adaptability.” Both aircraft are celebrated for their significant contributions to internal security, counter-terrorism, and close air support missions.
Modern Replacements
The PAF looks to the future with its new fleet, which includes Brazilian-made EMBRAER Super Tucano aircraft and Turkish TAI/AgustaWestland T129 ATAK helicopters. These modern platforms aim to build upon the legacy of their predecessors while advancing the country’s defense capabilities.
Looking Ahead
“The lessons learned and successes achieved during the distinguished careers of these aircraft will serve as a foundation for future operations,” the PAF stated.
This chapter’s closure signifies not only a tribute to the past but also a commitment to strengthening national defense with modern technology.
