The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has reiterated its dedication to maintaining a visible presence in the West Philippine Sea, ensuring peace amidst ongoing tensions with China. This stance aligns with President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s directive for enhanced maritime security and awareness due to significant threats to the Philippines’ territorial integrity.

Rear Admiral Armand Balilo, speaking for the PCG, highlighted the organization’s unyielding commitment to safeguarding the nation’s interests in the disputed waters, despite China’s aggressive tactics. The PCG’s mission remains focused on asserting the Philippines’ territorial rights without escalating conflicts, prioritizing peace and stability in the region.

The establishment of the National Maritime Council (NMC) under Executive Order No. 57 marks a strategic move to consolidate maritime governance. Chaired by Executive Secretary Lucas Bersamin, the NMC aims to create a cohesive policy framework for national maritime security, enhancing the Philippines’ capacity to address challenges in its maritime domains, including but not limited to the Ayungin Shoal.

The recent confrontations, including a dangerous encounter on March 23 where a Philippine vessel was blocked and surrounded by Chinese forces, underscore the volatile situation in the region. The PCG plans to intensify its maritime domain awareness and operations, extending beyond the frequently contested Ayungin Shoal to include other critical areas like Bajo de Masinloc.
