In a significant repatriation effort, the Philippine government welcomed the eighth batch of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), comprising 32 individuals, back home from Israel. This return was a direct response to the escalating conflict between Israel and Hamas. Hans Cacdac, the officer in charge of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), greeted the repatriates at Ninoy Aquino International Airport (Naia), bringing the total number of Filipinos repatriated from Israel to 264. However, there remain 83 pending repatriation requests still being processed.
Comprehensive Support for Returnees
The repatriates received financial assistance of P125,000 each upon arrival, aimed at providing immediate relief. The DMW, in collaboration with other government agencies, has outlined a robust support system. This includes additional livelihood assistance from the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration and the national reintegration center of the DMW. Furthermore, the Department of Health provided initial medical checkups, and plans are in place for psychosocial counseling for those potentially traumatized by the conflict.
Future Planning and Reintegration
The government’s commitment extends beyond immediate assistance. The Department of Social Welfare and Development and the Department of Labor and Employment are set to offer livelihood and employment assistance. The DMW has also organized a get-together to assess the well-being of the repatriates and discuss their future employment prospects or entrepreneurial ambitions.
The Triggering Conflict
The repatriation was necessitated by heightened tensions in the region. The Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) raised an Alert Level 3 for Filipinos in Israel following attacks by Hamas on Israeli communities in early October. These attacks led to significant casualties and abductions, including Filipinos. The subsequent Israeli military operations in the Gaza Strip and Hezbollah’s involvement further escalated the situation, prompting the evacuation of thousands, including Filipinos.
