The Department of Agriculture (DA) has reassured the public that the rice supply in the Philippines remains secure despite the destruction brought on by Typhoon Tino. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. stated that major rice-producing regions were largely spared or have already harvested their crops.
While rice production looks stable, the department cautioned that other crops — notably corn — could face heavier losses. The DA estimates around 33,000 hectares of corn fields were impacted by Tino. Measures are underway to provide relief such as seeds and inputs, expedite insurance claims and support affected farmers and fishers.
The DA also noted that the National Food Authority (NFA) has supplemental rice stocks ready—2.6 million bags earmarked for distribution through government relief channels and affordable-rice outlets, helping ensure no shortage in the near term.
