MANILA, Philippines — Sending shockwaves through the local sports community just as the country prepares to host premier international tournaments, global volleyball leaders have stepped in to seize control. The Fédération Internationale de Volleyball (FIVB) has suspended the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF) with immediate effect.
The global volleyball governing body cited “serious governance concerns and multiple purported violations of the FIVB Code of Ethics,” which are now undergoing an aggressive investigation by an independent ethics panel.
The international suspension caps off months of compounding organizational turmoil for the local federation, led by PNVF President Anthony “Tonyboy” Liao:

The internal fracture peaked when core members of the popular Alas Pilipinas women’s national team—including team captain Jia De Guzman, Bella Belen, and Angel Canino—stepped down from national pool duties. De Guzman broke her silence to demand a better system, calling out a lack of alignment between international calendars and local club seasons, as well as general failures in athlete welfare.
To keep Philippine volleyball operational and prevent a total shutdown of the sport during the governance probe, the FIVB has enacted Article 1.9.1 of its General Regulations to assemble a special Ad Hoc Committee to assume temporary control:

The FIVB explicitly re-verified that its immediate, absolute priorities are protecting the athletes and ensuring the flawless execution of upcoming local events, independent of the sanctioned PNVF leadership.
Compounding the PNVF’s legal woes, the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) simultaneously frozen all government financial assistance to the NSA on Friday over multi-layered contractual failures.
| Local Regulatory Breach | Realized Violation Detail | Resulting Institutional Penalty |
| National Team Lapses | Apparent absence of legitimate national team preparation for the upcoming AVC Women’s Volleyball Cup. | Immediate suspension of all state sports funding and PNVF-adjacent financial grants. |
| Commercial Contract Breach | PNVF failed to give the PSC primary, prominent logo placement during the Beach Pro Tour in Nuvali. | Funding remains frozen until the federation complies with baseline auditing and transparency rules. |
| Operational Misalignment | Total disconnect between the PNVF and the Asian Volleyball Confederation (AVC) in event delivery. | The PSC will bypass the PNVF board entirely to coordinate directly with international event organizers. |
Despite the administrative chaos, the FIVB assured Filipino fans that international tournaments scheduled on Philippine soil will proceed exactly as planned. The Alas Pilipinas women’s division will still take the court at the AVC Women’s Cup in Candon City from June 6 to 14 (now backstopped by veteran returnee Alyssa Valdez), and the highly anticipated Volleyball Nations League (VNL) women’s leg will push forward at the Philsports Arena.
While the AVC Board of Administration has reaffirmed its full confidence in AVC President (and former PNVF chief) Ramon Suzara, the local PNVF board has retreated into total silence, leaving an international committee to pick up the pieces of a fractured sport.
