VATICAN CITY – Pope Francis remains in critical condition as he battles double pneumonia, with the Vatican reporting a slight decline in his kidney function on Sunday.

The 88-year-old pontiff, who has been hospitalized at Rome’s Gemelli hospital since February 14, required a blood transfusion on Saturday after suffering a prolonged asthma-like respiratory crisis. His prognosis remains guarded, as doctors monitor his response to treatment.

Health Complications

  • The Vatican confirmed a “slight renal insufficiency,” but assured that it is currently under control.
  • Despite his condition, Pope Francis remains “alert and well-oriented” and is receiving high-flow oxygen therapy.
  • The blood transfusion has improved his hemoglobin levels, and his platelet count remains stable.

Doctors remain cautious, as his lung infection could lead to sepsis, a potentially life-threatening complication.

Pilgrims Pray for Pope’s Recovery

Concerned pilgrims and Vatican followers have gathered to pray for Pope Francis, leaving flowers, notes, and candles outside Gemelli hospital. The Diocese of Rome also held a special Mass, urging the faithful to pray for his strength and healing.

Despite his health struggles, Pope Francis sent a written message for his usual Sunday prayer, expressing gratitude to his doctors and supporters.

The Vatican continues to monitor his condition closely as the world prays for his recovery.
