Vatican City – Pope Francis released an audio message on Thursday, thanking those praying for his recovery as he nears three weeks in the hospital with pneumonia.
“I thank you from the bottom of my heart for your prayers… May God bless you and the Virgin protect you,” the 88-year-old pontiff said in his native Spanish, his voice breathless and words fading at times.
This marks the first time the public has heard the pope’s voice since he was admitted to Rome’s Gemelli hospital on February 14. Pilgrims in St. Peter’s Square applauded upon hearing his message.
The Vatican confirmed that Francis remains stable, continuing breathing exercises and physiotherapy with no fever. However, doctors remain cautious about his prognosis.
Despite missing Ash Wednesday observances and several Sunday Angelus prayers, the pope has continued to work in his hospital suite. A senior cardinal will lead Mass this weekend in his place.
With global concern growing, well-wishers are expected to gather outside the hospital on Saturday to pray for his recovery.
