In a recent address at the 16th Ani ng Dangal 2024 held at the Metropolitan Theatre in Manila City, President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. underscored the importance of government support for Filipino artists, emphasizing culture as the essence of Filipino identity. “Culture is the shared consciousness of the Filipino and it is the answer to the question, ‘What is it to be Filipino?'” Marcos stated, highlighting the role of cultural expression in defining the nation.

Marcos’ remarks reflect his belief in the pivotal role of the government in promoting and supporting the arts, asserting that the culture of a country shapes the identity of its people. He praised Filipino artists as ambassadors of culture, whose successes on global stages not only bring honor to the individual but also to the Philippines, enriching the country’s artistic heritage.

The event, which coincides with the conclusion of National Arts Month every February, celebrated at least 26 Filipino artists and groups who have gained international recognition across various disciplines including architecture, cinema, dance, dramatic arts, literary arts, music, visual arts, folk arts, and broadcast arts over the past year. These accolades underscore the global impact of Filipino artistic talent and the need for continued support and recognition within their homeland.

President Marcos’ call to action for governmental leadership in cultural support aims to ensure that Filipino artists receive the honor and recognition they deserve in their own country, acknowledging their contributions to the nation’s pride and cultural legacy.
