Philippine President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. expressed optimism that the recent Multilateral Maritime Cooperative Activity (MMCA) involving the Philippines, the United States, Japan, and Australia could prevent further Chinese aggression in the West Philippine Sea. In a statement made in Bacolod City, Marcos highlighted ongoing diplomatic efforts with China, aiming to de-escalate tensions in the region.

Marcos underscored the continuous dialogue at various levels to foster understanding and avoid confrontations in the disputed waters. He stressed the importance of communication and cooperation to ensure a peaceful environment, free from any hostile engagements like water cannon incidents.

Regarding the MMCA, Marcos described the joint maritime exercises as a strategic move, long in planning, which significantly enhances the operational synergy among the participating countries’ navies. This initiative aims to foster mutual understanding of naval operations, ensuring more efficient and coordinated actions in the maritime domain.

Vice President Sara Duterte, when queried about the persistent Chinese hostility towards Filipino fishermen in the West Philippine Sea and the MMCA’s outcomes, chose not to comment. She referred to her brother, Congressman Paolo Duterte’s previous statements, which suggested that it isn’t the Vice President’s role to criticize other nations in relation to the West Philippine Sea issues.

The MMCA saw the participation of the Australian Defense Force, Japan Self-Defense Forces, and the United States Indo-Pacific Command, alongside the Philippine military. The exercise included communication drills and tactical maneuvers, with Philippine naval vessels like the BRP Gregorio Del Pilar, BRP Antonio Luna, and BRP Valentin Diaz playing significant roles.
