A late-night blaze tore through a residential area in Barangay Obrero, Quezon City on Saturday, displacing over 140 families before it was finally put out early Sunday morning.

The fire erupted around 11:20 p.m. along Makabayan Street, within a densely packed informal settler community. The flames quickly spread as the homes were built from light and flammable materials, according to a report by Rod Vega on Super Radyo dzBB.

The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) raised the alert to third alarm as firefighters struggled to access the site through narrow alleys. They had to connect multiple hoses to hydrants located on Timog and Tomas Morato Avenues due to limited access.

The fire was declared under control by 4 a.m., but not before it destroyed at least 100 houses.

Barangay officials reported that 143 families have taken shelter in temporary evacuation sites, including the old barangay hall, another barangay facility, and Don Alejandro Roces Sr. High School on Roces Avenue.

Authorities are still investigating the origin of the fire and estimating the total property damage.
