MANILA, Philippines — The remains of a Filipina caregiver who tragically lost her life during the recent hostilities in Israel arrived at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Sunday morning. The arrival was met with a solemn ceremony attended by family members and high-ranking officials from the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) and the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).
The caregiver, who had been working in a southern Israeli town near the border, was among the casualties of the escalating regional conflict. Her body was repatriated via a commercial flight, with the Philippine government covering all expenses related to the transport and handling of her remains.
“Today, we welcome home a hero who dedicated her life to providing for her family and caring for others in a foreign land,” a DMW representative said during the handover ceremony. “Her sacrifice will not be forgotten, and the Philippine government is committed to providing her family with the maximum benefits and support they are entitled to under the law.”
Government agencies have prepared a comprehensive assistance package for the bereaved family, which includes death benefits, burial assistance, and educational scholarships for the victim’s children. Additionally, the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) will provide psychosocial counseling to help the family cope with the sudden loss.
The DFA reiterated that it is closely monitoring the situation of the remaining Filipinos in the conflict zones. While many have opted to stay, the government remains on high alert to facilitate the immediate evacuation or repatriation of any national who wishes to return to the Philippines.
Local officials from the victim’s home province were also present to escort the remains back to her hometown for the final funeral rites. The tragedy has renewed calls for stricter safety protocols and better protection for overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) stationed in volatile regions across the globe.
