This Valentine’s Day, the Department of Agriculture (DA) has proposed a novel idea: gifting rice to loved ones instead of the traditional roses. During a press briefing on February 13, 2024, DA Undersecretary Roger Navarro highlighted the practical benefits of choosing rice over flowers. “For Valentine’s Day, let’s gift our loved ones rice, not flowers. Flowers are inedible and thorny, whereas rice is sweet and nourishing. Let’s opt for more rice,” Navarro stated, emphasizing the food staple’s value over the aesthetic appeal of roses.

The suggestion comes at a time when the Philippines boasts an ample rice supply, projected to last through the first half of 2024. This stockpile results from recent rice imports coupled with the anticipated harvests in March and April. Despite the Philippines’ position as the world’s leading rice importer in 2024, according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. reassured the public of the country’s stable rice supply.

This innovative Valentine’s recommendation aligns with broader efforts to promote food stability and sustainability amidst global challenges, including climate change. By choosing rice as a gift, Filipinos can support local agriculture and contribute to food security, all while celebrating love and affection in a uniquely meaningful way.
