The security guard involved in the viral “Sampaguita Girl” incident has submitted a counteraffidavit through his agency as part of the administrative probe, the Philippine National Police – Civil Security Group (PNP-CSG) confirmed Friday.
PNP-CSG public information office chief Police Lieutenant Colonel Eudisan Gultiano told GMA News Online that both the guard and his agency participated in the submission process.
“The guard and agency have already submitted a counteraffidavit. A representative of the agency submitted on behalf of the guard,” Gultiano said.
Vendor Summoned for Probe
The CSG has also sent a notice to the sampaguita vendor, asking her to appear before the Supervisory Office for Security and Investigation Agencies (SOSIA) next week to share her side of the story.
The incident, which was captured in a viral video, showed the guard in a heated argument with the vendor, who was dressed in a high school uniform. The altercation escalated when the guard snatched and destroyed the vendor’s sampaguita garlands. The vendor retaliated by hitting the guard with remaining garlands before the guard appeared to kick her.
Details Behind the Incident
The vendor, identified as a 22-year-old first-year medical technology student, wore a high school uniform to attract customers, according to her parents. She is a scholar who sells flowers to help cover her tuition, travel, and daily expenses.
Following the incident, SM Megamall announced it had dismissed the security guard involved.
Security Guard Agency’s Statement
Redeye Management, the agency overseeing the security guard, issued an apology and emphasized that they are conducting due process to address the incident.
“We sincerely apologize for the actions displayed in the video and assure everyone that we are already conducting due process with the guard involved,” the company said.
Redeye highlighted the importance of de-escalation in security operations and reminded all guards to uphold values of empathy, compassion, and professionalism.
“May this serve as a reminder to all agencies of the values we must uphold in performing our duties. It is crucial to prioritize de-escalation and avoid letting emotions take control of our actions,” the agency stated.
CSG’s Reminder to Security Professionals
The CSG reminded private security professionals to adhere to the PSP Creed and Code of Ethical Standards, emphasizing the importance of professionalism in their duties.
As the investigation continues, the SOSIA is expected to gather both sides of the story to determine accountability and recommend appropriate actions.
