The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has recently announced the successful recovery of fossilized giant clam shells, with an estimated value of PHP 8.1 million, in the coastal town of Balabac, Palawan. These clam shells, known locally as “taklobo” or “manlet,” were confiscated on February 14 and have since been handed over to the local government for safekeeping and further action.
This significant find comprises 336 pieces of the protected species, highlighting the ongoing efforts to combat illegal wildlife trade. The harvesting of these endangered giant clams is strictly prohibited under the Philippine Fisheries Code of 1998 (Republic Act No. 10654), which imposes severe penalties for violations, including hefty fines up to PHP 3 million and imprisonment for up to eight years.
The PCG’s diligent work underscores the commitment of Philippine authorities to protect marine biodiversity and enforce environmental laws rigorously. This operation serves as a reminder of the critical need to preserve our natural resources and the stringent measures in place to deter illegal activities detrimental to marine ecosystems.
