Surfing Capital of the Philippines Tops Travel List

Siargao, known as the Surfing Capital of the Philippines, has been ranked first on Lonely Planet’s list of the best places to visit in Southeast Asia. The global travel magazine highlighted Siargao’s renowned surfing spots, vibrant local community, and array of activities as key reasons for its top ranking.

Celebrating Siargao’s Achievements

In a July article, Lonely Planet praised Siargao for its tropical paradise appeal, especially its quality surfing locations like the famous Cloud 9 break, considered one of the best waves in the world. “Surfers can take a boat out to Rock Island or Daku, or ride the left reef break at Stimpy’s,” the article noted.

Recognition from the Department of Tourism

Department of Tourism (DOT) Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco welcomed the recognition. She described Siargao as a destination that “balances adventure and excitement with tranquility and sustainability.” Frasco emphasized that this acknowledgment is a proud moment for the entire country, highlighting the global appreciation for the Philippines’ diverse landscapes, rich culture, and warm people.

“This achievement motivates us to continue our efforts in promoting sustainable tourism and preserving the natural wonders of our beautiful archipelago,” Frasco added.

Siargao’s Surfing Legacy

Siargao, located in Surigao del Norte province, is a hotspot for the global surfing community, regularly hosting international and local competitions. The island recently hosted the 27th Siargao International Surfing Cup, a qualifier for the World Surf League (WSL) Men’s and Women’s QS3000 International Surfing Cup. Filipino surfer John Mark Tokong was crowned the champion of the 27th Siargao International Surfing Competition, continuing his reign from the 26th edition in 2022.
