Simbang Gabi, a revered Christmas tradition among Filipino Americans, is set to commence on December 15, attracting thousands across the United States. This annual event, also known as Misa de Gallo or Rooster’s Mass, comprises a series of dawn masses leading up to Christmas Eve. It’s a hallmark of the Archdiocese of Los Angeles’ rich religious and cultural traditions, symbolizing the strength of religious and cultural exchange within diverse parish communities.
This year, the theme for Simbang Gabi is “Hesus, Pinakadakilang Regalo sa Lahat, Tunay na Nasa Eukaristiya” (Jesus, the Greatest Gift of All, Truly Present in the Eucharist). The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Angels in Los Angeles will host the inaugural mass, led by Archbishop José H. Gomez. A significant aspect of the celebration is the parade of Christmas lanterns or parols, symbols of hope and joy, which will be blessed at the end of the Mass.
Over 120 parishes from the Archdiocese, covering Los Angeles, Santa Barbara, and Ventura counties, will participate. The San Fernando Region organizes the event, inviting families, parishes, and organizations to join in this cherished Filipino Catholic tradition, emphasizing community unity and spiritual preparation for Christmas.
