South Korean investigators have renewed their request for acting President Choi Sang-mok to instruct the presidential security service to comply with an arrest warrant for impeached President Yoon Suk Yeol.

Security Standoff

On Friday, the presidential security service, supported by military troops, prevented prosecutors from arresting Yoon during a six-hour standoff at his compound. The warrant was issued following Yoon’s controversial declaration of martial law on December 3, which shocked the nation and led to his impeachment.

Investigative Demands

The Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials has asked Choi, who also serves as the nation’s finance minister, to ensure the security service complies with the law. Meanwhile, police have summoned Park Chong-jun, the chief of the presidential security service, for questioning on Tuesday, as reported by Yonhap News.

A finance ministry spokesperson has declined to comment on the matter.

Context and Fallout

Yoon’s declaration of martial law last month marked an unprecedented move in South Korea’s democratic history, prompting a swift backlash and legal action. The arrest warrant issued for Yoon is the first ever for a sitting South Korean president.

Despite the controversy, Yoon has vowed to “fight until the end”, refusing to cooperate with authorities.

The political crisis continues to unfold as investigators push for accountability, while tensions remain high between legal authorities and Yoon’s defenders.
