SEOUL — South Korea’s Constitutional Court has commenced its review of President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment following allegations of a December 3 attempt to impose martial law, a court spokesperson confirmed on Monday.

The impeachment motion, passed by the opposition-led parliament on Saturday, accuses Yoon and senior officials of potential insurrection for the brief declaration of martial law earlier this month.

Court Proceedings and Timeline

All six current justices of the Constitutional Court are participating in the initial review. The court has a six-month period to deliberate on whether to remove Yoon from office or to reinstate him.

Investigations Underway

Meanwhile, a joint investigative team comprising representatives from the police, the defense ministry, and an anti-corruption agency plans to summon Yoon for questioning on Wednesday, according to Yonhap News.

Yoon has already declined a summons for questioning by a separate investigation led by the prosecutors’ office on Sunday.

Further confirmation from the investigators’ office regarding the upcoming questioning has yet to be obtained.
