A tragic stampede at New Delhi Railway Station on Saturday night claimed the lives of at least 15 people and left 15 others injured, officials confirmed. The incident occurred as massive crowds, including Hindu pilgrims heading to the Maha Kumbh festival in Prayagraj, gathered on two platforms.
Among the victims were 10 women and three children, local reports said. Disturbing images showed chaotic scenes as passengers scrambled to board trains, prompting swift action from police and emergency teams.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences on social media, while Interior Minister Amit Shah and Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw assured the public that relief efforts were underway. Additional trains were deployed to manage congestion, and an inquiry has been launched into the incident.
This marks another devastating tragedy amid India’s ongoing rail infrastructure challenges. Just last month, a stampede at the Maha Kumbh festival resulted in numerous deaths, highlighting the risks associated with massive gatherings.
