Strong Group Athletics (SGA), representing the Philippines in the 34th Dubai International Basketball Championship, has officially withdrawn from the tournament’s third-place game following a controversial 68-63 semifinal loss to Tunisia.
The team announced its decision on Sunday (Philippine time), citing “officiating inconsistencies” that they claim significantly affected the outcome of their semifinal match.
“We at Strong Group Athletics have officially decided not to participate in the third-place game of the 34th Dubai Basketball International Championship, as we call for equality and fairness in officiating and for the game to be treated with the proper respect,” the team stated.
Controversial Calls Spark Withdrawal
SGA highlighted multiple non-calls throughout the game, stating that crucial decisions favored Tunisia. The most controversial moment occurred at the nine-second mark of the fourth quarter when Rhenz Abando attempted a game-tying three-pointer. Despite “obvious contact” from Tunisia’s Mokhtar Ghayaza, no foul was called.
“Despite the obvious contact, the referees failed to call a foul, effectively sealing Tunisia’s victory and ending our championship hopes,” SGA added.
Tunisia secured the win after Radhouane Slimane sank two free throws following a foul on Chris McCullough.
Strong Comeback Falls Short
Before the controversial finish, SGA had mounted an impressive comeback after trailing by as much as 16 points. Tunisia led 49-33 early in the third quarter, but SGA cut the deficit to 12 heading into the final period.
Fueled by Chris McCullough and DeMarcus Cousins, SGA went on a 9-0 run, capped by a Mikey Williams three-pointer, narrowing the gap to 63-65 with 1:02 remaining. However, Williams later committed a foul against Omar Abada, who split his free throws to extend Tunisia’s lead to 66-63.
McCullough and Cousins both top-scored with 18 points each. Cousins also contributed 15 rebounds, two assists, two steals, and one block in what turned out to be their final game of the tournament.
Statement on Sportsmanship and Fairness
SGA emphasized that their decision to withdraw was not just about a single game but about advocating for fair officiating in international basketball.
“Our decision not to play in the third-place match is not just about one game—it is about advocating for officiating that upholds the spirit of sportsmanship and ensures that all teams are given a fair chance to compete,” SGA said.
SGA was set to face the UAE National Team in the battle for bronze, a team they had previously defeated 99-91 in their tournament opener.
