Geneva, Switzerland – A crew member of Swiss International Air Lines who was hospitalized following an emergency landing has tragically passed away, the airline confirmed on Monday.
The Airbus A220-300, carrying 74 passengers and five crew members, was en route from Bucharest to Zurich on December 23 when engine issues caused smoke to fill the cockpit and cabin. The aircraft made an emergency landing in Graz, Austria, where the affected crew member was hospitalized.
“It is with the deepest sorrow and regret that we share the passing of our young colleague in the hospital in Graz on Monday,” Swiss said in a statement.
Swiss International Air Lines CEO Jens Fehlinger expressed profound grief over the loss. “We are devastated by the death of our dear colleague. Our thoughts are with the family during this unimaginable time,” he said, pledging the airline’s full support to the grieving family.
The incident has left the airline and its staff in shock, underscoring the risks aviation professionals face in ensuring passenger safety.
The Swiss aviation community mourns the loss of the crew member, whose name has not been released, as investigations continue into the cause of the engine issues that led to the emergency landing.
