TARLAC CITY, Philippines — While the official summer season has yet to begin, Tarlac City is already facing a significant surge in grass fire incidents. Firefighters and volunteers have been kept busy over the past week as dry conditions and rising temperatures trigger blazes across numerous villages.

A Busy Week for Firefighters:

The Tarlac Filipino Chinese Volunteers Fire Brigade (TFCVFB) and the local Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) have responded to nearly daily calls since mid-February.

  • Feb 28: A fresh blaze was reported in Santa Cruz village.
  • Feb 27: Four separate fires broke out in Panampunan, Tibag, Central, and San Isidro.
  • Feb 26: Another four incidents occurred in Aguso, San Isidro, Kumintang, and San Miguel.
  • Earlier in the Week: Multiple blazes were also extinguished in Amucao, Mabini, Buhilit, Maliwalo, Lourdes, San Rafael, and Salapungan.

Causes and Warnings:

The BFP in Central Luzon noted that high temperatures combined with dry vegetation can lead to spontaneous combustion or the rapid spread of small sparks. Residents are being urged to exercise extreme caution:

  1. Avoid Open Burning: Refrain from burning garbage or agricultural waste in open fields.
  2. Cigarette Disposal: Ensure cigarette butts are fully extinguished before disposal.
  3. Report Early: The public is encouraged to report any signs of smoke immediately to prevent small grass fires from reaching residential structures.

Volunteer Impact:

The TFCVFB has played a critical role in augmenting the city’s official fire station, using water cannons and specialized trucks to reach off-road areas where grass fires often start. As the dry season intensifies, authorities are bracing for a potentially record-breaking year for fire-related calls in the region.
