Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) Commodore Jay Tarriela said the decision to publicize China’s aggressive actions in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) is a strategic move to ensure that future Philippine presidents remain committed to defending national sovereignty.

Tarriela, spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea, emphasized the importance of maintaining public awareness and political momentum beyond President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s term.

“We’re doing this so that by 2028, we elect a president who won’t dismiss our fight in the WPS or joke about it,” said Tarriela, referencing former President Rodrigo Duterte’s infamous jetski remark during his 2016 campaign—something he later admitted was just a joke.

According to Tarriela, the transparency efforts that began in 2023 have boosted public consciousness, with 89% of Filipinos now aware of the WPS issue. He also stressed that international exposure of China’s disregard for international law—despite being a signatory to the UNCLOS—helps rally global understanding and support.

“This issue is not just about politics or economics,” he added. “It strikes at the heart of our identity as Filipinos. Our freedom was paid for with the sacrifices of our heroes.”

Tensions remain high as Beijing continues to assert near-total control over the South China Sea, overlapping with the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone. Despite a 2016 international ruling favoring Manila, China refuses to recognize the decision.
