A civilian-led Christmas convoy, embodying a spirit of solidarity and patriotism, has embarked on a significant journey to the West Philippine Sea (WPS), showcasing the united efforts of Filipinos in supporting their compatriots in the disputed region.

The Departure and Mission:

  • Setting Sail: The convoy, initiated by the ATIN ITO Coalition, departed from Manila for El Nido, Palawan, on a 150-capacity civilian marine vessel. Over 40 volunteers, including youth and student leaders, as well as fisherfolk representatives, joined the expedition.
  • Journey to the West Philippine Sea: From El Nido, the convoy, consisting of 40 boats, will proceed to the vicinity of Ayungin Shoal, Patag, and Lawak islands from December 10 to 12. Their mission is to distribute donations and supplies to the residents and troops stationed in these areas.
  • National Security Council’s Involvement: The National Security Council (NSC) initially expressed concerns about the convoy directly entering Ayungin Shoal. However, they later approved the mission, with the condition that the convoy remains within the vicinity of these disputed waters.

The Significance and Intent:

  • Asserting Philippine Rights: Fishermen from Bataan joined the mission as part of efforts to assert the country’s rights in the face of Chinese presence in the WPS. This mission is seen as a peaceful yet assertive demonstration of Philippine sovereignty in the region.
  • A Humanitarian Effort: The convoy is also a humanitarian mission to support communities in Palawan, aiming for a peaceful journey without intimidation from external forces. It represents the first civil movement towards Ayungin Shoal in the WPS.
  • Support for Troops and Residents: The NSC confirmed that the convoy would visit Pag-asa Island to hand over gifts and supplies to the Philippine Navy and Coast Guard for routine resupply of BRP Sierra Madre. These supplies include noche buena packs, solar lamps, sacks of rice, canned goods, hygiene kits, gadgets, toys, and statues of figures from the “Nativity”.

A Display of Resilience and Unity: The Christmas convoy to the WPS is a profound example of Filipino resilience and unity in the face of territorial disputes and external challenges. It highlights the importance of maintaining sovereignty and supporting those who safeguard the nation’s territorial integrity, all while embracing the spirit of the holiday season.
