In a tragic turn of events, the eruption of the Marapi volcano in Indonesia claimed the lives of eleven climbers. The eruption, which occurred over the weekend, led to a harrowing search and rescue operation. As per the official statement, the volcano, standing at 2,891 meters, unleashed a cloud of ash extending as high as 3 kilometers into the sky. The situation necessitated an elevation of the alert to the second-highest level, coupled with a strict prohibition on approaching within 3 kilometers of the crater.

The rescue team, led by spokesperson Jodi Haryawan, faced challenging conditions. Alongside the grim discovery of the deceased climbers, three survivors were found among the 75 people present at the eruption site. Sadly, the rescue efforts for the 12 still missing had to be suspended due to ongoing safety risks, as a smaller eruption was reported on Monday.

Rescue efforts saw 49 climbers evacuated, many of whom are now receiving treatment for burns. This incident highlights Indonesia’s vulnerability to volcanic activities, as it is part of the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” a region with 127 active volcanoes according to the volcanology agency.
