Michelle Dee, who recently made it to the Top 10 in the Miss Universe 2023 pageant, expressed heartfelt gratitude for the recognition of her efforts, despite not securing the crown. Speaking before the House Resolution commending her performance, Dee, also the newly appointed Department of Tourism ambassador, reflected on her journey with warmth and pride. Her statement, “Sobrang nakakataba po talaga ng puso [to be recognized],” highlighted her deep appreciation and love for her country, embodying the spirit of a true Filipino representative.
Dee’s commitment goes beyond pageantry; she is a staunch advocate for autism awareness and inclusivity. With a personal connection to the cause — having two siblings on the autism spectrum — Dee’s mission is to spread awareness, acceptance, and empowerment for individuals with autism globally. “This is an advocacy that I did not choose but chose me,” she remarked, underscoring her dedication to this lifelong mission.
Her presence in the Miss Universe pageant was not just about beauty; it was a platform for cultural representation. Her final evening gown, designed by Filipino fashion designer Mark Bumgarner, was inspired by Apo Whang-Od, the oldest mambabatok (traditional Kalinga tattooist) in the Philippines. The gown featured meaningful Kalinga patterns: the hourglass or rice mortar for spiritual shield and creation, the fern for strength and health, and the snakeskin for protection and strength. Dee’s attire was a testament to her deep-rooted connection to Filipino culture and heritage.
In addition to her Top 10 finish, Dee’s achievements in the Miss Universe pageant included winning four special awards, including Best National Costume, showcasing the richness of Filipino culture on the global stage.
