CALAPAN CITY, Oriental Mindoro — A routine trip turned fatal for a motorcycle rider on Sunday morning, May 10, 2026, after a concrete electric pole suddenly collapsed and crushed him along a national highway in Oriental Mindoro.
Local authorities identified the victim as Reynaldo Gutierrez, a 42-year-old resident of the area. The incident occurred at approximately 8:30 AM in Barangay Gulod, Calapan City, during a period of moderate winds.
According to the initial investigation by the Calapan City Police, Gutierrez was traveling southbound when a pole owned by a local electric cooperative gave way.
- Sudden Collapse: Eyewitnesses reported that the pole snapped at its base without warning. Gutierrez, who was wearing a helmet, was unable to maneuver away in time as the heavy concrete structure fell directly onto his path.
- Fatal Impact: The victim sustained massive head and chest injuries. Emergency responders from the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (CDRRMO) arrived within minutes, but Gutierrez was pronounced dead at the scene.
- Infrastructure Condition: Preliminary inspections suggested that the base of the pole may have been compromised by recent soil erosion or “deterioration of the concrete foundation,” though a full technical audit is still pending.
The accident caused significant power outages in several barangays and led to a temporary traffic standstill along the national highway.
- Power Interruption: The Oriental Mindoro Electric Cooperative (ORMECO) immediately dispatched technical teams to isolate the line and replace the fallen structure. Power was reportedly restored to 70% of the affected areas by Sunday afternoon.
- Police Investigation: Investigators are looking into whether there was any prior report of the pole leaning or if recent construction work in the vicinity contributed to the instability of the ground.
- LGU Action: Calapan City Mayor’s office has reached out to the victim’s family to provide immediate burial and financial assistance.
The tragic event has sparked outcry from local residents regarding the maintenance of utility poles across the province.
“This was a preventable tragedy,” a relative of the victim stated. “We see many poles that are leaning or have too many heavy wires attached to them. We need the electric cooperatives to check these before another life is lost.”
ORMECO released a brief statement expressing their condolences and vowing to conduct a “comprehensive inspection” of all aging electric poles along the national highway to prevent similar occurrences.
