In a heart-wrenching event in Matag-ob, Leyte, a farmer succumbed to a fatal cardiac arrest triggered by the extreme heat, as reported on GMA Integrated News’ “Unang Balita” this Thursday. The farmer, identified as Rogelio Sumpino, was seen collapsing while carrying wood, according to a neighbor’s account.

Tragically, by the time responding police officers arrived at the scene, Sumpino had already passed away. The municipal health officer confirmed that the cause of death was a cardiac arrest induced by the severe heat conditions.

This sorrowful incident highlights the increasing dangers posed by extreme weather conditions, particularly to those in labor-intensive occupations such as farming. It serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for measures to protect vulnerable populations from the health risks associated with heat waves and other effects of climate change.
