Bangkok, October 1, 2024 – A devastating school bus fire on the outskirts of Bangkok has left at least 23 people dead, including students and teachers, police confirmed on Tuesday. The bus, which was carrying over 40 people from Wat Khao Phraya School, caught fire during a field trip.

Forensic experts have identified 23 victims, and authorities are investigating the cause of the fire. Initial reports suggest a spark from a tire may have ignited the vehicle’s gas-powered engine.

Sixteen students and three teachers were hospitalized for injuries. Images shared on social media show thick smoke billowing from the burning bus, with rescue teams working to control the situation.

Transport Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit confirmed that the bus was powered by natural gas, and officials are looking into potential negligence by the bus company.

Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra expressed her condolences to the victims’ families, saying, “As a mother, I am deeply saddened by this tragedy.”
