Barangay Ginebra’s Troy Rosario has been called up to the Gilas Pilipinas pool to bolster the team ahead of the final window of the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers next month.
Rosario to Step Up
Head coach Tim Cone confirmed Rosario’s inclusion on Wednesday, citing injuries to key players Kai Sotto and Kevin Quiambao. “Troy will join us for the Doha trip,” Cone said, referring to Gilas’ upcoming training and friendly games in Qatar as preparation for the February window.
Rosario, a seasoned player and former Gilas mainstay, is expected to provide height and scoring to the national team. His familiarity with the Gilas system and experience under Cone in the ongoing PBA Season 49 Commissioner’s Cup make him a strong fit for the squad.
Injury Woes for Gilas
Sotto, who averages 15.5 points and a team-high 12.5 rebounds in the qualifiers, is sidelined with an ACL tear in his left knee sustained during Koshigaya’s Japan B. League game on January 8. Meanwhile, Quiambao, averaging 11.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 2.3 assists, is recovering from a foot injury incurred during his Korean Basketball League debut for Goyang Sono last Sunday.
Rosario’s Credentials
A veteran of multiple SEA Games gold medal campaigns (2015-2019), Rosario brings valuable experience and versatility to Gilas. As a key player for Barangay Ginebra, the former National University standout has consistently showcased his skills under Cone’s guidance.
With Rosario stepping in, Gilas Pilipinas aims to stay competitive despite losing two of its vital players.
