The truck driver involved in the fatal crash along Batasan-San Mateo Road in Quezon City has tested positive for methamphetamine, the Quezon City Police District (QCPD) confirmed on Wednesday.

Identified only as “Eruel,” the driver underwent both alcohol and drug testing in line with the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act of 2013. While the alcohol breath test yielded a negative result, the drug test confirmed the presence of methamphetamine hydrochloride, commonly known as shabu.

Authorities conducted a full inspection of the 10-wheeler truck involved in the May 28 incident, but found no drugs or paraphernalia inside the vehicle.

According to QCPD Deputy Director for Administration Police Colonel Randy Glenn Silvio, “Eruel” will be charged under the Anti-Drunk and Drugged Driving Act. Silvio warned that drivers caught under the influence of drugs face severe penalties.

Under the law, drivers found guilty in fatal incidents can be sentenced to 12 to 20 years in prison and fined between P300,000 and P500,000.

The crash resulted in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to several others, with the truck hitting multiple vehicles along the busy road. The driver is also facing complaints of reckless imprudence resulting in multiple homicide, physical injuries, and property damage.
