Washington, D.C. – President Donald Trump and tech billionaire Elon Musk have intensified efforts to downsize the U.S. federal workforce, targeting bank regulators, rocket scientists, and tax enforcers as part of a sweeping government overhaul.
The initiative, led by Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), has resulted in thousands of job cuts since Trump’s inauguration last month.
Major Layoffs Across Agencies
📉 NASA: 1,000 new hires, including rocket scientists, expected to be laid off.
📉 IRS: Identified 7,500 employees for dismissal.
📉 FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation): Unknown number of new hires fired.
📉 FEMA & DHS: Mass firings expected at the Federal Emergency Management Agency and Department of Homeland Security.
The Trump administration has not disclosed the total number of layoffs, with figures coming from federal employees and agencies.
Court Battles and Legal Concerns
20 lawsuits have been filed challenging Musk’s authority to execute these dismissals.
U.S. District Judge Tanya Chutkan allowed the job cuts to continue, stating plaintiffs failed to prove irreparable harm.
Chutkan, however, questioned Musk’s unchecked power as an unelected official.
“Plaintiffs legitimately call into question what appears to be the unchecked authority of an unelected individual and an entity that was not created by Congress,” Chutkan stated.
Political Fallout and Controversy
Republicans praise the move, calling the federal workforce bloated and disloyal to Trump.
Democrats argue the cuts threaten essential government functions and undermine oversight.
Congressional Democrats claim their requests for information have gone unanswered.
Musk’s Influence and Investigations
Concerns have emerged over Musk’s business interests, as the layoffs included federal employees overseeing his companies, including Neuralink.
While Trump assured Musk will not be involved in space-related decisions, he defended him, saying:
“Elon is, to me, a patriot… You could call him an employee, a consultant, whatever you want.”
With uncertainty looming, the job-cutting spree is expected to continue, shaping a new era of federal governance under Trump’s second term.
