As the Israel-Iran air war enters its fifth day, U.S. President Donald Trump has issued a sharp ultimatum to Tehran, calling for Iran’s “unconditional surrender.” His remarks came via Truth Social, where he also warned that U.S. patience was “wearing thin,” although he clarified that the U.S. has no immediate plans to target Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
In a parallel statement, Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz compared Khamenei’s situation to that of Saddam Hussein, warning him of the consequences of continued attacks on Israeli citizens.
Explosions were reported in Tehran and Isfahan, while air raid sirens sounded across Tel Aviv as Iran launched more missiles at Israel. Trump’s messaging on the crisis has varied between threats and potential diplomacy, creating global uncertainty about the U.S. role in the escalating conflict.
Despite growing tension, Trump indicated there are no immediate plans for direct U.S. military engagement, though he mentioned possibly dispatching Middle East Envoy Steve Witkoff or Vice President JD Vance for diplomatic talks. Meanwhile, the U.S. is ramping up its air presence in the region.
Israel claims Iran’s military leadership is “on the run,” announcing the death of Ali Shadmani, the country’s wartime chief of staff, in an airstrike. Iranian leaders are reportedly facing a major security breakdown, prompting a ban on mobile device use among top officials.
Iran denies pursuing nuclear weapons, asserting its right to peaceful nuclear technology under the Non-Proliferation Treaty. However, the International Atomic Energy Agency has noted signs of damage at Iran’s key enrichment site in Natanz.
The air war was triggered by suspicions that Iran was close to producing a nuclear weapon. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has vowed to press on until Iran’s nuclear program is neutralized, while Trump has suggested Iran must agree to strict enrichment limits to end the conflict.
So far, Iran has launched around 400 ballistic missiles and hundreds of drones at Israel. The ongoing strikes have caused significant casualties, with Iran reporting 224 deaths and Israel reporting 24.
