WASHINGTONU.S. President Donald Trump suggested on Monday that Chinese President Xi Jinping may visit the United States “in the not-too-distant future” as the two nations continue to grapple with escalating economic tensions.

Trade War and Fentanyl Dispute

Since taking office in January 2025, Trump has imposed 20% tariffs on all Chinese imports, blaming Beijing for failing to curb the flow of chemicals used to manufacture illegal fentanyl, a leading cause of U.S. overdose deaths.

Despite recent optimism about his relationship with Xi, Trump acknowledged that key issues remain unresolved, including trade tariffs and Taiwan.

China has strongly opposed the tariffs, claiming it has taken serious counter-narcotics measures. In response, Beijing has imposed limited retaliatory trade actions.

Xi’s Potential Visit to the US

“He’ll be coming, in the not-too-distant future,” Trump said during a board meeting at the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center in Washington.

However, no formal announcement has been made, and both the White House and the Chinese embassy in Washington declined to comment on the potential visit.

Economic and Diplomatic Uncertainty

Trump has defended tariffs as a necessary tool to rebalance U.S.-China trade relations and generate government revenue, dismissing concerns about inflation and economic slowdown.

With Xi’s possible visit on the horizon, all eyes are on whether the two leaders can ease tensions or if the trade dispute will continue to escalate.
