WASHINGTON — On the eve of his second inauguration, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump pledged to impose strict immigration limits and initiate sweeping actions during a rally at the Capital One Arena in Washington on Sunday.
“By the time the sun sets tomorrow, the invasion of our country will have come to a halt,” Trump declared to an enthusiastic crowd at the “Make America Great Again Victory Rally.”
Immigration Crackdown
Trump reiterated his campaign promise to launch the largest deportation effort in U.S. history, targeting millions of immigrants. Experts warn, however, that such an operation would take years and require massive resources.
He also outlined plans to classify drug cartels as “foreign terrorist organizations,” reinstate the “Remain in Mexico” policy for asylum seekers, and declare an emergency at the U.S.-Mexico border.
Executive Orders and Policy Overhaul
The President-elect vowed to repeal “every radical and foolish executive order of the Biden administration” within hours of taking office. Sources indicated Trump plans to sign over 200 executive actions on his first day, with border security among the top priorities.
In addition, Trump pledged to remove “radical woke ideologies” from the military and construct a missile defense shield over the U.S., though he did not provide specifics.
Symbolic Actions and Promises
Trump announced plans to release classified documents related to the assassinations of President John F. Kennedy, Senator Robert Kennedy, and Martin Luther King Jr.
At the rally, he also took credit for TikTok’s restored service in the U.S., after promising to delay a ban. TikTok CEO Shou Zi Chew and other tech leaders, including Elon Musk, are expected to attend Monday’s inauguration.
Biden’s Final Day
Outgoing President Joe Biden marked Martin Luther King Jr. Day in Charleston, South Carolina, urging Democrats not to lose hope.
Security Measures
Due to bitter cold weather, Trump’s inauguration ceremony has been moved indoors to the Capitol rotunda. Approximately 25,000 law enforcement officers are set to provide security, with steel fences blocking streets near the Capitol and White House.
