WASHINGTON, United States — Former President Donald Trump, days before returning to the White House, spoke by phone with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Friday. Both leaders vowed to take steps toward improving relations between the two global powers despite ongoing tensions.

Aiming for a “Good Start”

President Xi expressed hope for a “good start” in their renewed relationship, while Trump stated, “It is my expectation that we will solve many problems together.”

Among the topics discussed were trade imbalances, fentanyl-related issues, and the controversial US law targeting TikTok. Trump later commented on his social media platform, Truth Social:
“President Xi and I will do everything possible to make the world more peaceful and safe!”

Fentanyl and Trade Frictions

Trump reiterated his concerns about China’s role in the flow of fentanyl’s chemical components into Mexico, contributing to an estimated 70,000 overdose deaths annually in the United States. The ongoing trade disputes, including threats of additional tariffs on Chinese imports, remain a contentious issue.

Tensions Over Taiwan

Beijing urged the US to handle the Taiwan issue with caution. President Xi stated that the matter concerns China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, according to state-run Xinhua. Trump’s nominee for Secretary of State, Marco Rubio, has taken a strong stance on defending Taiwan, calling China the most “dangerous near-peer adversary” the US has faced.

National Security and TikTok

Trump also opposes a looming TikTok ban set by legislation passed under the Biden administration, which requires ByteDance, TikTok’s Chinese owner, to sell the platform or cease operations in the US by Sunday. The move stems from concerns that TikTok could be used for spying or propaganda.

Navigating a Complex Relationship

Trump’s return to the Oval Office has reignited fears of escalating tensions between the US and China, but both leaders’ remarks signal potential efforts to stabilize relations. Trump has expressed a desire to meet Xi in person soon, and Xi described the call as initiated at Trump’s request.

Outgoing President Joe Biden noted in his farewell speech that his administration prevented US-China relations from tipping into conflict and affirmed that the US would remain the world’s dominant superpower.
