JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia – Ukraine has agreed to a 30-day ceasefire in its conflict with Russia following talks with U.S. officials in Saudi Arabia, according to a joint statement from the countries involved.
U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio announced that Washington would now present the proposal to Moscow, emphasizing that the decision for peace now lies with Russia.
Additionally, the United States will lift the pause on intelligence sharing and resume security assistance to Kyiv, marking a significant shift in U.S. policy.
Ceasefire Covers Full Frontline, Says Zelenskiy
Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy was in Saudi Arabia, he did not participate directly in the negotiations. However, he welcomed the ceasefire as a “positive proposal”, stressing that it applies not only to ground combat but also to air and naval operations.
After eight hours of negotiations, the U.S. and Ukraine issued a statement confirming that the ceasefire could be extended by mutual agreement, depending on Russia’s response.
U.S. Pushes Russia for Peace Talks
“The United States will communicate to Russia that Russian reciprocity is the key to achieving peace,” the statement said, indicating that Moscow’s reaction will determine the next steps.
The resumption of U.S. intelligence-sharing follows a period of strained relations, particularly after a contentious White House meeting last week between U.S. President Donald Trump and Zelenskiy.
Ukraine, U.S. Advance Critical Minerals Deal
In a parallel development, Washington and Kyiv are working to finalize a strategic agreement on Ukraine’s critical mineral resources. The deal had been stalled due to recent diplomatic tensions but now appears back on track.
A top aide to Zelenskiy also confirmed that discussions included potential security guarantees for Ukraine, though details remain undisclosed.
The ball is now in Russia’s court, with the world watching to see if Moscow will accept the ceasefire and take steps toward a longer-term peace settlement.
