The United States has extended an additional ₱196 million ($3.5 million) to assist the Philippines in supporting victims of Tropical Storm Kristine.

According to the US Embassy in the Philippines, this new aid package focuses on providing clean water, sanitation, shelter, and cash assistance to residents in the hardest-hit areas, including the Bicol Region and Batangas. The funds will also help communities affected by subsequent disasters.

“As your friend, partner, and ally, the United States is committed to working with the Philippine government and people as they rebuild and recover,” US Ambassador MaryKay Carlson said in a statement.

Kristine’s Impact

Tropical Storm Kristine, which was within the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) from October 21 to 25, left at least 116 fatalities and caused nearly ₱6 billion worth of damage to agriculture.

Ongoing Support

In October, the US provided an initial ₱84 million in aid. Since 2010, the US has contributed over ₱22 billion ($393.6 million) to the Philippines for disaster relief, preparedness, and recovery efforts.

As the country continues to recover from Kristine’s devastation, PAGASA has reported Typhoon Pepito intensifying ahead of landfall, while Typhoon Ofel has weakened into a severe tropical storm.
