In an unusual yet modern twist, the Vatican has posted a job-style listing on LinkedIn detailing the qualifications required to become the next pope, following the passing of Pope Francis on April 21. The Holy See says the post comes in response to numerous inquiries during the current “sede vacante” period — the time between papacies.
The papal conclave, where cardinals will vote on the new pope, begins May 7. A total of 135 cardinals under the age of 80 are eligible to cast their vote inside the Sistine Chapel, where they’ll remain isolated until a two-thirds majority agrees on a new Bishop of Rome.
The LinkedIn post outlines the canonical prerequisites: one must be a baptized male Catholic in good mental and moral standing, eligible for episcopal ordination, and free of canonical penalties.
Traditionally, popes are cardinals with deep Eucharistic devotion, theological knowledge, a love for Mary, and a life marked by holiness.
Beyond doctrine, the Vatican also highlights practical leadership skills — including diplomacy, public speaking, multilingualism (especially in Latin and Italian), emotional resilience, and a willingness to serve tirelessly with little rest, always prioritizing the poor.
