The House of Representatives’ prosecution team has tapped seasoned human rights lawyer Antonio Audie Bucoy as its official spokesperson for the impeachment trial of Vice President Sara Duterte.
With over four decades in litigation, Bucoy graduated from the University of the Philippines College of Law in 1984. Even before becoming a lawyer, he was active in the Free Legal Assistance Group (FLAG) and the Movement of Attorneys for Brotherhood, Integrity, and Nationalism, Inc. (Mabini)—both known for defending civil rights and public interest.
Bucoy, who also has experience teaching corporate and remedial law and managing a law firm focused on corporate, tax, and appellate cases, shared that he started his human rights advocacy in law school. He worked under the leadership of prominent figures like Jose Diokno, Joker Arroyo, and Lorenzo Tañada, assisting victims of human rights violations.
Speaking to the press, Bucoy emphasized that the prosecution panel is committed to ensuring a fair and timely trial, stressing that uncovering the truth is paramount.
“We will not cause any delays. There are wrongdoings that need to be revealed. When it comes to due process, nothing is more crucial than seeking the truth,” he said. “The longer you hide the truth, the more urgent it becomes to uncover it. That’s why we must all stay alert.”
