Senatorial aspirant and former Executive Secretary Vic Rodriguez has vowed to push for the reimposition of the death penalty for plunder and a significant reduction in the monetary threshold for the crime if he wins in the May 2025 elections.
Speaking on dzBB’s “Ikaw Na Ba? The Senatorial Interviews,” Rodriguez emphasized a need for a “war on corruption,” arguing that the problem has worsened over the years.
“I will propose lowering the threshold for plunder from ₱50 million to ₱5 million or even less,” he said. “If we achieve that, I will advocate bringing back the death penalty as punishment for plunder because we are already tired of this corruption.”
Rodriguez added that the threshold could be reduced to ₱1 million, asserting, “Stealing is stealing regardless of the amount.”
Addressing Corruption and Confidential Funds
Rodriguez criticized the persistence of corruption at all levels and expressed optimism that the public would support the death penalty for plunder given its prevalence.
On confidential and intelligence funds, he emphasized fairness, arguing that scrutiny should apply uniformly to all government agencies, including the Office of the Vice President.
“Transparency should not be selective,” he said. “If you investigate one, you must investigate all.”
Views on the West Philippine Sea
Regarding the West Philippine Sea, Rodriguez called for diplomatic solutions over military action. He criticized “megaphone diplomacy” and “war mongering,” suggesting that bilateral talks with China were preferable to multilateral discussions involving foreign mediators.
“It is not in our interest to go to war with China,” Rodriguez stated. “Let’s be real. We cannot afford war. Instead, we should engage in direct and diplomatic bilateral discussions.”
Rodriguez also cited former President Rodrigo Duterte’s inclusive foreign policy as a model, advocating for friendly relations with all nations.
Other Proposals
Rodriguez laid out additional priorities, including:
- Wage standardization: Equal pay for workers regardless of location, asserting that “it is not true that life is cheaper in the provinces.”
- Penalties for political turncoats: He supports imposing sanctions on those who frequently switch parties.
- Amending the Constitution: Rodriguez favors constitutional amendments but said it should not happen under the current administration.
Fast Talk on Key Issues
Rodriguez shared his positions on pressing issues:
- Political dynasty: Depends on the definition.
- Divorce: Opposed, citing existing annulment laws.
- Legalization of jueteng: Against.
- Medical marijuana: Supports only if hospital-administered.
- Death penalty: In favor, specifically for plunder and drug trafficking.
Rodriguez underscored his intention to address corruption and promote fairness if elected senator, positioning himself as a staunch advocate of reform.
