Vice Ganda expressed heartfelt gratitude and pride after receiving the Special Jury Citation at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival (MMFF) for his performance in And the Breadwinner Is… The award, a first for the actor-comedian, highlighted his artistic growth and his contribution to meaningful narratives addressing contemporary issues.
Breaking Boundaries with Recognition
The MMFF noted that the Special Jury Citation recognizes an actor who “broke ground and went out of their comfort zone to prove growth as an artist and tackle relevant societal issues.” Vice Ganda, visibly moved and amused, initially joked about the nature of the award during his acceptance speech, lightening the mood with his signature humor.
‘Finally Seen’ as an Actor
“This is the first time I’ve won an MMFF award,” Vice Ganda shared. “I am finally seen.” He thanked ABS-CBN for giving him the opportunity to work on such a significant project, especially during challenging times for the network. He also expressed gratitude to director Jun Robles Lana for crafting a story that resonated deeply with audiences.
Vice Ganda dedicated the award to his mother, his husband Ion Perez, and the LGBTQIA+ community, calling it a victory for everyone who shared his journey.
A Shared Triumph
“I share this with my co-stars and with the entire LGBTQIA+ community,” he said, adding, “Thank you, MMFF, for recognizing me and my abilities as a gay performer.”
Laughter in the Spotlight
Never missing an opportunity to entertain, Vice joked about the award being a “runner-up” consolation and hinted it signaled he wouldn’t win Best Actor. However, he ended with gratitude, praising his fellow nominees and dedicating his achievement to the And the Breadwinner Is… team.
Vice Ganda was nominated for Best Actor alongside Arjo Atayde, Seth Fedelin, Piolo Pascual, Vic Sotto, and eventual winner Dennis Trillo.
