Authorities recovered around ₱19.2 million worth of suspected marijuana floating off Escoda Shoal, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP).
Police said the illegal drugs were found inside several plastic-wrapped packages drifting near the disputed shoal in the West Philippine Sea. The discovery was made by local fishermen, who immediately alerted authorities.
Upon verification, law enforcement confirmed the contents to be dried marijuana leaves. The packages were later turned over to the PNP Crime Laboratory for further analysis.
Investigators are now working to trace the source of the shipment and determine whether it is connected to smuggling or drug trafficking operations in nearby areas.
The PNP commended the fishermen for their quick action, emphasizing that community cooperation plays a key role in keeping the seas safe from illegal activities.
