A 20-year-old driver is under investigation after his SUV plowed through five vehicles in San Juan City on Friday morning, allegedly after he fell asleep behind the wheel.
According to a report by Emil Sumangil on 24 Oras, the white Nissan Terra was headed to Pinaglaban Shrine when it first collided with a maroon sedan along N. Domingo Street. It then slammed into three tricycles before finally hitting a passenger jeepney.
Authorities confirmed that ten people suffered minor injuries while one victim remains in critical condition at the San Juan Medical Center.
San Juan Police Chief Col. Deodennis Marmol said the driver had come from an overnight hangout and had not gotten any rest. “He was sleep-deprived, and he only woke up after the crash,” Marmol shared.
The young driver voluntarily turned himself in. His family has promised to cover the medical expenses of all those injured.
Police are using this incident as a reminder to the public about the dangers of driving while fatigued. “Don’t drive when tired or lacking sleep. Make sure you’re healthy and alert when on the road,” Marmol emphasized.
