The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) is looking into acquiring 12 additional FA-50 fighter jets as part of its ongoing efforts to modernize the country’s air defense capabilities.

AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. said the acquisition is already in the pipeline, making it a likely next step for the Philippine Air Force (PAF), which currently operates 11 FA-50PH Golden Eagle jets. These South Korean-made aircraft are used for advanced training, air defense, and light strike operations.

“We are seriously considering the addition of another 12 FA-50s,” Brawner confirmed during a press briefing.

The AFP is also evaluating options for acquiring more advanced multi-role fighter jets, including the American-made F-16 Fighting Falcon and Sweden’s Saab Gripen. The decision will depend on available budget and long-term defense strategy.

In 2024, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. approved the acquisition of more multi-role fighters. Recently, the U.S. government greenlit a $5.58 billion sale of 20 F-16s to the Philippines, although final agreements have yet to be made.

According to Philippine Ambassador to the U.S. Jose Manuel Romualdez, the F-16s could be delivered as early as 2026 or 2027.

This comes as the PAF prepares to lift the grounding of its FA-50 fleet following a crash in Bukidnon during a tactical night operation in March.
