The Bureau of Corrections (BuCor) has transferred more than 150 persons deprived of liberty (PDLs) from the New Bilibid Prison (NBP) in Muntinlupa City to the Leyte Regional Prison in Abuyog, Leyte. The inmates arrived at their new facility on Tuesday after traveling on four buses.

BuCor shared the update in a Facebook post, stating that NBP security personnel escorted the transfer. Upon reaching Tacloban City, security was further reinforced by the Leyte Regional Prison team and Baybay City police.

To ensure safety and prevent contraband, canine units meticulously inspected the belongings of the transferred inmates.

The journey from Muntinlupa City to Abuyog spans over 900 kilometers, taking more than 22 hours by public transport.

This transfer is part of BuCor’s broader efforts to decongest the New Bilibid Prison, which is set to close by 2028. Over 9,000 PDLs have already been relocated to various facilities nationwide, according to a report by Luisito Santos on Super Radyo dzBB.
