Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo has been named the 2024 Athlete of the Year by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) for his historic performance at the Paris 2024 Olympics.

Olympic Glory

Yulo brought pride to the Philippines by winning two gold medals in the floor exercise and vault events, making him the second Filipino to achieve Olympic gold after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz’s triumph at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. This victory marked redemption for Yulo, who narrowly missed a podium finish in the vault finals during the Tokyo Games.

Stellar 2024 Season

Beyond his Olympic success, Yulo dominated the Asian Championships in Tashkent, Uzbekistan, where he claimed gold medals in the individual all-around, floor exercise, vault, and parallel bars events.

The recognition makes Yulo the first gymnast to win the PSA Athlete of the Year award since Pia Adelle Reyes in 1997.

Upcoming Honors

Yulo will officially receive the Athlete of the Year award on January 27 at the PSA’s annual awards night. Other accolades to be presented at the event include the NSA of the Year, Major Awards in other sports, the President’s Award, and Special Recognitions for Filipino athletes and para-athletes who competed in the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics.
