In time for the Cebu Press Freedom Week celebration, Cebu Governor Gwen Garcia said that she will try her best as governor that Cebu media be given an opportunity to have their own homes.
“I will try my very best as governor that our Cebu media be given the opportunity to own their own houses,” she said adding, “Ngano gud intawn nga dili makaangkon og balay ang atong Cebu media?”
This was the response of Garcia to the statement of Arnold Bustamante, the reelected president of the Cebu Federation of Beat Journalists during their oathtaking last night that the governor administered.
Bustamante in his speech mentioned to the governor the lamentable condition of some members of CFBJ who could not even secure housing loans from the government’s Pag-ibig Fund because their salary grades would not qualify.
Garcia gave her “solemn commitment” that she would bring the matter personally to the Department of Human Settlement and Urban Development.
CFBJ is the only legitimate media organization in Cebu composed of 12 different beat assignments covering all facets of Cebuano society.
“I opted that we would host you tonight here at the Capitol because this should mark a relationship that we have nurtured through the years. Love me or hate me, it seems that all these years, you have been there, reporting on a Gwen Garcia,” the governor added.
