Chelsea Manalo has revealed the inspiration behind her stunning Miss Universe national costume, rooted in the diverse religious heritage of the Philippines.
The Filipina beauty queen donned a gold gown with intricate white sleeves, crafted by designer Manny Halasan. Completing the look were a striking silver-and-gold headpiece and two fans—an homage to the singkil, a traditional dance of Philippine Muslim culture.
In an Instagram post, Chelsea shared that her costume, named “Hiraya,” embodies an ancient Tagalog word meaning “hope” or “aspiration.”
“Hiraya reflects believing in dreams and aspirations until they come true. Faith guides us through life, regardless of the religion we follow,” Chelsea said.
She emphasized the power of prayer and devotion, adding, “When we put faith and effort into our dreams, everything is possible in God’s perfect time. Even amid challenges, roadblocks, and uncertainties, there is hope and divine guidance.”
The design also draws from the historical and cultural ties between the Philippines and Mexico, both deeply rooted in religion.
Chelsea explained, “This symbolizes the shared devotion and cultural bond between our nations. It represents how religion has united people across different beliefs in harmony and respect.”
Key features of the costume include:
- Islamic Influence: The use of Inaul fabric from Sultan Kudarat, traditional Tongkaling bells, and Islamic-inspired patterns. Tongkaling bells, known for their distinct sound, are believed to bring protection and blessings.
- Bulacan’s Craft: The gown showcases Puni, a celebrated art form from Bulacan.
- Galleon Trade Symbolism: Chelsea’s headpiece resembles a beaded boat, representing the historic Manila-Mexico Galleon Trade.
- Religious Iconography: The bright blue train features an image of the Virgin Mary, known as Our Lady of Antipolo or Our Lady of Good Voyage, a significant relic introduced to the Philippines from Mexico in the 16th century.
Chelsea, the first Filipino-Black American to win the Miss Universe Philippines title, will compete for the country’s fifth Miss Universe crown on November 16 (November 17 in the Philippines).
